What a place to holiday

Nelson and Tasman is a pretty amazing place to live, but an even better place to holiday. So with that in mind and whether you’re a local or visiting from outside the region, Waimea Weekly has put together this holiday edition packed full of things

to do in Nelson and Tasman over the New Year period. This summer holiday period is expected to be a big one, according to local tourism businesses and Nelson Tasman Tourism, and why wouldn’t it? Our beaches are suberb, our national

parks are second to none and our restaurants and bars are the perfect place to refuel after a busy day. But the number of top events on is also reason for those spending their summer in Nelson to smile. The Jazz and Blues Festival, Blackcaps v

Sri Lanka internationals, top bands at the Riwaka Hotel, outdoor movies... the list goes on. So enjoy our region this summer. Enjoy the sun, the food and the beaches and on behalf of everyone at Waimea Weekly, have a very happy New Year. - Editor.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Thank you to everyone for their continued support. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a safe and enjoyable holiday period! Milestone Homes Nelson Bays Show Home 8B Champion Road, Richmond P 03 543 8663 E nelson@milestonehomes.co.nz

Rabbit Island a top spot for summer fun Moturoa-Rabbit Island is one of the most diverse recreational areas in the region and that's why it is always a popular destination for holiday makers. The eight kilometre long island, situated just 7km west from Richmond has much more than a clean, safe and spacious beach. There are picnic areas with free barbecues, mountainbiking tracks, including a section of the Tasman Great Taste Trail that links with the Mapua Ferry, and walking tracks. And it's one of the warmest swimming beaches around with summer water temperatures over 20 degrees Celsius, especially when the tide comes in over superheated sands. The beach is also popular for surf casting, horse riding and boating, with a designated eques-

However, one of the biggest attraction is the island's sheer size which means the beach is rarely crowded - even during the peak of the holiday season when over 4000 cars a day have been counted driving to the main beach. It's not surprising that the main beach is so expansive because Moturoa-Rabbit Island and Rough Island are essentially a giant sandbar formed around 7000 years ago at the mouth of the Waimea River.

Moturoa-Rabbit Island and Rough Island became a recreational reserve in 1908 and today are mostly covered by commercial pine plantations owned by the Tasman District Council. They are only a 10 minute drive from Richmond taking State Highway 60 and turning off at Seifried Estate corner onto Redwood Rd and then onto Ken Beck Drive. Moturoa-Rabbit Island is open to the public during daylight hours and has a network of roads around the periphery of the island, providing access to the recreational areas as well as to public amenities including toilets and beachside showers. Dogs are prohibited from MoturoaRabbit Island, although are permitted on Rough Island.

Another local operator, Brendan Alborn, owner of Abel Tasman Aqua taxi, also says it’s shaping up to be a good summer tourist season for them. “We’ve seen a good increase in people using our water taxi and kayaking services over last year, and last year was a record year for us, too,” he says. “This year, the season seemed to kick-off earlier and there are more people visiting the Abel

Tasman generally.” Lynda says that Nelson’s busiest period, also known as “the height of the season,” runs from December 23 until January 23, where the region sees a big migration of visitors from Canterbury. “Then, in February, we see a big new wave of international visitors until about May when the colder weather sets in,” says Lynda. “The main motivator for people coming here is the outdoor offerings, to visit friends and family, and, of course, the great weather – and if Nelson turns on good weather, people stay longer.”

Nelson’s summer tourism season is shaping up to be a busy one, with many operators around the region tracking ahead compared to this time last year. “We’re definitely in for a busy season,” says Nelson Tasman Tourism chief executive, Lynda Keene. “All the indicators are there that we’ll see some strong growth from the positive season last year, which will come from both New Zealand and new emerging markets.” She says hotel bookings across the region are looking strong, and the B&B sector is also looking solid right up to the end of Easter. Campgrounds around the region are also on track for a busy summer. Tahuna Beach Holiday Park general manager Marcel Fekkes says their bookings are up from last year and they are ready for their annual influx of guests. “Our numbers are looking really good – it’s going to be bumper season.” The holiday park has just installed a giant bouncy pillow in the playground and

New Year to kick off with a bit of jazz Jessie Johnston

How much Jazz and Blues can you pack into four days? Quite a bit it appears, thanks to this year’s Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival. For the last 24 years, Nelson has welcomed in summer and the New Year with a celebration of great music, this year being the festival’s 25th birthday. The Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival sees four days of live music from a stellar line up of local performers, as well as guests from around the world, and will kick off at 3pm on New Year’s Day with a concert at Fairfield Park in Nelson. The event then moves to several locations around the region, including 1903 Square on Trafalgar St, Morrison Square, River Kitchen Café, The Sprig & Fern on Hardy St, Playhouse Café and Theatre Restaurant, Golden Beer Brewery and Underground. On Sunday, January 3, a special 25th birthday celebration will be held at the Honest Lawyer, before the ever-popular, curtain closing, open-air performance at Washbourn Gardens in Richmond on January 4. “The formula that’s been used has been a very successful one and that is very much around having a park event to launch it and close it, having the sponsorship and support from so many different local businesses so that we can bring in people from out of town, and also [including] local bands. The club at times [includes] up to nine

The Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival began with the establishment of the Nelson Jazz Club Inc., which in turn was an idea seeded in the backyard of drummer Rupert Winter and American trombonist Al Leonard. Ever since it was created, the Nelson Jazz Club has incorporated musicians and indi-

Evolving from street performances and the Nelson City Councils desire for a jazz-in-the-park-style event, the first Nelson Jazz Festival debuted in the Botanical Reserve. The festival’s musically rich and varied programme has become recognised as one of New Zealand’s founding jazz festivals, the opening and closing shows at Fairfield and Washbourn each attracting around 3500 people, but none of it would have

been possible without the hundreds of musicians who have given voice to their love of jazz, the thousands of people who have enjoyed the performances and the many supporters, businesses, sponsors and trusts who have generously given their money to make the festival viable. “My understanding is that the Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival is certainly highly regarded amongst New Zealand jazz festivals and music festivals generally,” says Mike. “One of the things we enjoy, of course, is that the region is full of visitors anyway at this time of year, but some people come specifically for the festival.” While some concerts are free, others appreciate a donation of $5, and the 25th birthday celebration at the Honest Lawyer is a ticketed event, adults costing $35 per person and children under 12 years are $20. These prices include a full buffet lunch as well as six hours of jazz music entertainment. Tickets to the 25th birthday show can be purchased from Beggs Music Works on Hardy St, the information desk in the Richmond Mall and at the Honest Lawyer, but be quick as there is a limited number. The Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival is the perfect way to welcome in 2016 with friends and family, so don’t miss out on the Nelson sunshine, beautiful venues and some spectacular musical performances. Tasman Mayor: Have a happy and safe holiday For many of us, December marks the end of another busy year. It’s a time when we can look forward to great weather, a well-earned break and time spent with family and friends. I am always moved at this time of year by the generosity and community-mindedness of people who live in our district. So many of you donate your time and resources to creating enjoyable events for those who do not have family and friends to share in the festivities with. Once again, this year, there will be community and volunteer run activities across the Nelson and Tasman region, with something for everyone to enjoy. I was very pleased to attend community Christmas lunches in Richmond, Motueka and Nelson. I also enjoyed the Christmas Carols in Washbourn Gardens on December 20 and hope everyone joined in the festive cheer. December is also a time Richard when we can reflect on the events of the last 12 months. Kempthorne. I’m extremely proud to be able to say that this year the council has delivered on the key commitments we made to you at the beginning of the year. We’ve kept our focus firmly on reducing debt, while ensuring that we’ve been able to deliver on key projects and keep rates increases to a minimum. This is quite an achievement by staff and councillors, and is a testament to the hard work and dedication your council have to our communities and this fantastic region. So, whatever you are doing this festive season, stay safe, look out for one another and enjoy a wonderful time with friends, family and neighbours. I wish you all a safe and happy holiday and a successful year ahead.

The Nelson Tasman region is well known for its beautiful beaches but this summer, if you’d rather not drag sand all through the car, take a trip to some of our magnificent swimming holes around the region’s rivers. Some of the most popular swimming destinations can be found in the Maitai and Roding rivers, not just because of their close proximity to Nelson and Richmond, but because both rivers also feature plenty of picnic areas and easy access to superb swimming holes. The Lee River has a giant swimming hole located at the Lee Reserve, which features a large rock bank that is perfect for launching oneself into the water at height. Enjoying that in the photo are Sophie Brown, left, and Tracey Colligan. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Black Caps coming to Saxton The Black Caps are back in Nelson this summer, playing two back-to-back one-day international cricket matches against Sri Lanka. The games will be played on December 31 and January 2 at Saxton Oval, and are the third and fourth matches of the five game ANZ International Series. Nelson Cricket general manager Richard Hayward says he is “delighted” to bring international cricket to Nelson again and is looking forward to two exciting games. “This will be the first time that Saxton Oval has hosted back-to-back international matches, and the timing should be ideal with Nelson at full capacity with thousands of holiday makers from around the country,” he says. To prepare for the crowds, the stand at the Nelson end has been enlarged and the ground capacity is now 7000, increased from the 6000 for the world cup. “These matches will draw a lot of people into the area, particularly as the Blackcaps are playing so well at the moment after a highly impressive world cup campaign,” says Richard. “They are playing a very exciting brand of cricket and we expect the series with Sri Lanka to be very competitive.” Richard says the success of the of the Cricket World Cup matches played in Nelson last February and March played a significant part in being allocated matches this season, along with how the city got behind the tournament. The first match on December 31 kicks off at

Kiwi favourites ready to rock Riwaka Hotel The Riwaka Hotel will be full of nostalgia this weekend, as one of New Zealand’s bestloved bands celebrates an album that shot them to fame 17 years ago. The Feelers will be playing Supersystem, their 1998 debut album in its entirety at the iconic hotel this Sunday night. The five-times platinum album, which sold over 83,000 copies, is being remastered and reissued too. The concert is one of three massive shows to come to Riwaka this summer, with Katchafire featuring Sons of Zion and The Black Seeds, and Shapeshifter with Kora and the Sunshine Sound System all due to hit the hotel’s stage within the next week. The Feelers front man James Reid says the band is looking forward to their Nelson show, which will be the last one of their summer tour. They last played here in May as part of a mini South Island tour. “We love to come to Nelson, and Riwaka is one of the best places in New Zealand to play,” he says. “We played our first

James has his solo record coming out next year also, so there is plenty on to keep us busy.”

Top walking tracks throughout N

The Nelson-Tasman region is a hiker's paradise with three national parks, two of the country's nine Great Walks and one of the country's sunniest climates. But Nelson Tramping Club president Pat Holland says there's much more to the region than the Abel Tasman, Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes parks and Heaphy and Abel Tasman Coastal tracks. One of the region's best kept secrets is the network of day walks within minutes of the city. "It's the accessibility of these walks that makes them so popular," Pat says. "There aren't too many urban areas, even in New Zealand, that have so many amazing walks right on their back doorstep. "The Grampians are great because they are so close and have some wonderful views. The Brook is pretty special too you only need to walk for an hour and you are amongst big Matai, Totara and Rimu trees - I love it back there." Although Pat enjoys the more challenging walks that involve climbing some reasonably steep hills, he says there are also plenty of more leisurely walks around Nelson and Richmond. The Centre of New Zealand is a classic short walk with a smaller climb and rewarding views while Rabbit Island has a labyrinth of flat walks suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The Railway Reserve and tracks that fol-

low the Maitai River are also popular, especially for more a sedate walk. They are ideal for parents pushing prams or taking young children on their scooters, Pat says. "We are spoiled in Nelson but we have to keep up the good work and keep improving the existing tracks and developing new ones. They are doing some good work in the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary and it's that kind of vision that will make sure that Nelson remains a haven for walkers."

Pat's favourite walks: Upper Brook Valley: Drive up Brook St to the campground only 5km from Nelson City. Walk across the footbridge and take the main track to the dam and weirs that are part of the historical remains of Nelson City's water supply. More adventurous walkers can continue to Falcon Ridge and the Totara Traverse Track. Involution-Barnicoat: The Involution Track starts at the head of Marsden Valley Rd in Stoke and climbs about 700m through native bush to the ridge on the Barnicoat Range. The climb takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Return either via Involution, Widdershins Track or along the ridge line to Barnicoat Hill and down four-wheel-drive track.

Watch out for mountainbikers.

Grampians Kahikatea Track: The track starts in parking area 1km along Market Rd in Bishopdale. It features a large Kahikatea near the boardwalk about half way up and great views of Nelson and the coastline from the main lookout platform near summit. There's an option to return via Mahoe Track or a network of other tracks on the hill that lead to Nelson or the Brook Valley. Grampians from Nelson City: The main track starts at the top end of Collingwood St or alternatively at the back of Fairfield House on Van Diemen St where there is parking. The track goes up through grand old redwoods before joining the main track which has a steep gradient to the top. Walkers can then take a side track through planted natives to Ronaki Tce and return to Nelson through a pretty neighbourhood passing Nelson College, Fairfield House, Melrose House and Fairfield Park

or continue up the ridge to the main lookout platform near the summit which is a two hour round trip. Centre of New Zealand: A classic walk for visitors to Nelson with the main track from the Botanics Reserve winding directly up to the summit lookout. The walk takes about 1 hour return although another option is to continue along the Sir Stanley Whitehead Walkway and then drop down into Founders Park for an ice-cream or nice cold beer.

Hackett Track: Drive up Aniseed Valley Rd off State Highway 6 south of Richmond for about 10km to the Hackett Picnic Area. The track crosses a footbridge bridge at the picnic area and then a swing bridge after about 1km and continues 4km up to the Hackett Hut. The round trip takes about 2 hours. Walkers can also detour to the picturesque Whispering Falls about half way to the Hackett Hut or 5km up the Browning Stream to the Browning Hut. Also a popular mountainbiking track.

COOKBOOK LAUNCH IN HOPE: Allyson Gofton is coming to Nelson on Sunday April 3 to Hope Community Church Hall on Ranzau Rd at 2.30pm to launch her new cookbook to celebrate 50th years of the Country Calendar TV series. The local Walk with Us Charitable Trust is going to benefit from Allyson's visits and tickets to the event go on sale in March. If readers would like to pre-book tickets to this event email janetbilltaylor@ gmail.com. Tickets are limited so pre-booking will avoid disappointment.

Rural fire chief: We need your help

Volunteer rural fire fighters around Nelson and Tasman are hoping for a quiet Christmas and New Year but Waimea Rural Fire Authority principal rural fire officer Ian Reade says that will only happen if holiday makers follow a few simple precautions. The rural fire authority has already taken a number of steps to reduce the fire risk including not issuing any fire permits from December 20 to January 11. But Ian says the wider community also plays a big part in preventing forest and vegetation fires and that’s going to be crucial after the fire danger was officially increased to high this week. “We have had some rain but we have also had wind and hot temperatures and that’s dried everything out,” Ian says. “The grass has turned quite a lot in the last week so everyone needs to be aware of the increased fire danger. “People need to be really careful, especially on windy days, and be aware that things like mowing lawns and grinding and welding can cause sparks and start fires. Even riding quad bikes through long grass and parking them in long grass is risky because quad bikes have very high exhaust temperatures.” However, Ian says one of the biggest dangers at this time of year is people letting off fireworks during New Year’s celebrations. He says fireworks have caused quite a few fires over the years and “they’ve been very expensive for the people that start them”. “Our message is clear - don’t use them. It’s too risky.” Ian also advises holiday makers using gas and charcoal barbecues to have a hose nearby “just in case” and make sure there’s nothing flammable lying around the flames. Woodfires barbecues in picnic areas around the region can be used although they will be closed if the fire risk increases. Ian says Nelson and Tasman residents are generally “well educated when it comes to preventing vegetation fires and we appreciate that.” He says the Waimea Rural Fire Authority also appreciated the great work of all their staff and volunteer rural fire fighters and wished them “a happy but quiet Christmas and New Year”.

Our wines are world-beaters Enjoying a wide range of world class wines is just one of the attractions of spending a day touring around Nelson's wine growing region. Nelson's 30 boutique wineries may not be the biggest in the country, producing just 2.4 per cent of New Zealand's total tonnage of grapes, but there's no doubt that they are among the best. You only need to look the long list of gold medal and trophy winning wines that are coming out of the region to see that there is exceptional quality across all varieties. Nelson wineries won three of the 18 trophies at last month's Air New Zealand Wine Awards with Brightwater Vineyards leading the way with its trophywinning Pinot Noir. Blackenbrook's Gerwurtztraminer (Bragato), Seifried's Sweet Agnes (Air New Zealand Trophy), Waimea Estate's Albarino (Air New Zealand Trophy) and Neudorf 's Moutere Chardonnay which received the first perfect 100 out of 100 from Bob Campbell are just some of the region's latest award winning wines. Wine Nelson's marketing manager Meg Matthews says the other feature of Nelson wines is the diversity of varieties and styles, which is quite unique in New Zealand. Meg says the Nelson region may be famous for its exceptional chardonnays and aromatics but Brightwater Vineyard's Pinot Noir underlines that fact that it also produces superlative wines across many other varieties.

Brightwater Vineyards Valley and Gary Neale with their award winning Pinot Noir and Air New Zealand Trophy. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. "We have inspired winemakers that are winning awards and are at the top of their game," she says. "We have also won awards across a number of varieties which makes us a unique region for being so diverse." Meg says another highlight of Nelson wine tours is often the opportunity to meet and chat with the winemakers. Nelson's wineries are all family-owned and visitors are "more than likely to be greeted by the winemaker or owner" when they call in to the cellar door. "Not many regions boast this authenticity. Our wineries proudly bridge that gap between artisanal and excellence," Meg says.

As well as great wine and hospitality, Meg says wine tourists can also enjoy Nelson's spectacular scenery and the exquisite cuisine offered at some of wineries. And, if they feel inclined, they can combine pleasure with exercise, opting to travel by bicycle with many of the wineries on or near the Tasman Great Taste Trail cycleway. "We have 24 cellar doors open around the Nelson region and it's a wonderful chance to sample the world class wines and experience some spectacular views. It is a great way to spend the day." 40 38 around town before. Asian39 restaurants are popular dining destinations throughout New ZeaMORE MEALS OVER PAGE land, but there’s often little difference between their menus and it was important to the team that their restaurant stood out from the rest. The result is a menu with Vietnamese and Thai flavours, thanks to Nuttavut’s time cooking in a Vietnamese restaurant in South Africa, and his own Thai culture. Bu-nga and Nuttavut thought hard about the dishes they loved growing up, recalling the additional ingredients their mothers added to make it taste perfect. When it comes to curry paste and other sauces, you won’t find anything out of a packet, The Lemongrass is dedicated to authentic flavours, which is why they make it all on site, using plenty of fresh herbs and fragrant spices to send you to Thailand or Vietnam, even if it’s only for an hour or so. If you’re not in the mood to eat out, The Lemongrass will also be catering to takeaway orders so you can savour a little bit of Asia from the comfort of your couch. With an abundance of fresh herbs from their garden in Blenheim at hand, Bu-nga says they are also planning to plant a garden of fresh herbs around The Lemongrass in Richmond too, and the kitchen staff always try to source local fruit, vegetables and other ingredients where possible. Bu-nga says the restaurant refrained from a grand opening until the team had settled into

35

36

their 41new premises,42and now they are officially welcoming people to experience their take on Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. Located in what was previously the Arthur Wakefield Tavern, The Lemongrass features an intimate dining area, as well as outdoor seating for those warm summer evenings and most importantly, a menu full of flavour. From spring rolls and butterfly prawns, to slow cooked pork belly in a ginger garlic curry sauce, fragrant pineapple chicken curry, crispy duck, lemongrass fish and coriander chicken kebabs. Bu-nga and Nuttavut wish to thank their customers for all the support they have received over their years in business in Nelson, Richmond and Blenheim. While the success of their restaurants is due to the enticing cuisine they present to diners, Bunga says none of what they have achieved would have been possible without their loyal customers. The Lemongrass Richmond is open now and the team invites you to experience their Asian Fusion menu today. The restaurant is open for lunchtime service on Wednesday to Sunday, from 11:30am until 2:30pm, while dinner is available on Tuesday to Sunday, from 5pm until 9:30pm. Bookings are encouraged and can be made by calling The Lemongrass on 544 4838. You’ll find the restaurant at 294 Queen Street, Richmond.

Glyn is a passionate golfer himself and encourages anyone and everyone who wants to improve their swing, or introduce themselves to the game of golf, to come and make use of the facility. Open seven days a week, from 8am until 6pm, the cost is minimal with a small bucket of golf balls available for just $4, while a medium bucket is $8 and a large bucket, with over 100 balls, is just $12. The last bucket of golf balls is available from the Pro Shop at 5:30pm, plus, there are clubs for hire too, so whether you have all the gear or none at all, there’s nothing stopping you from getting out and having some fun. For more information on the driving range, contact the team at Total Golf on 548 5028 today.

Motueka Aero Club is on the look out for new members. On Sunday, January 10, the club will be hosting an informal open day for anyone interested in learning about the perks of becoming part of the club. All of their available aircraft will be out on display for people to inspect, but if you really want to get to grips with the planes, the club will be offering trial flights for just $70. You’ll get the chance to take control of the aircraft in the skies over Kaiteriteri, accompanied by an experienced pilot of course, or have a go at a bombing competition to see if you can accurately drop the bomb on the target. Club members will also be there on the day to answer any questions you may have, a sausage sizzle will be running and if you want to see

some real flying talent, keep an eye out for the aerobatic display midway through the day. As a fully paid up member you can begin flying lessons, take part in trips as a passenger to numerous destinations including weekends in Hanmer Springs and fishing at Karamea, the opportunity to fly competitively, or simply enjoy the chance to spend time with likeminded aircraft enthusiasts. The Motueka Aero Club currently has 100 members and three aircraft available for hire, plus a Young Eagles program for people aged 1218. The open day will be running from 10am until 3pm, on Sunday, January 10, at 16 College St, Motueka. The Motueka Aero Club welcomes everybody interested to come along.

Summer

Surf ’s up for local lifeguards Brittany Spencer They may not wear skimpy togs or run along the beach to like Bay Watch star David Hasselhoff, but the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club will be out on the water, watching swimmers this summer. Club captain, Aaron Lyttle says although Nelson has some of the safest beaches in the South Island, people still need to be careful. “For us, it’s mainly about beach presence,” says Aaron. “We’re always there to give advice, hand out sunscreen, provide first aid and educate the public about water safety on our beach.” The Nelson Surf Life Saving Club has 120 members, with over 30 lifeguards patrolling Tahunanui Beach each summer. The club has a strong Nippers and Surf sport programme, and patrol every weekend from December until late March. While Tahunanui Beach is no Piha Rescue, it has it’s own dangers, with lifeguards performing around 15 rescues each season. “The main dangers at Tahunanui

Beach are the big tidal movements and the blind channel off Parker’s Cove,” says Aaron. Tahuna’s shallow beach means that tides can turn quickly, and as a group of skinny dippers learned the hard way earlier this month, it’s easy to get caught out by the tides if you’re not paying attention. Aaron’s advice for anyone heading to the beach this summer, “always keep an eye on your kids, be sun smart, be safe and have fun.” Aaron says the lifeguards are stoked to get the season underway and will take any opportunity to get out on the water, do some training and have some fun. “The club is certainly looking forward to this season, we’ve got some great members, we’re all good friends and we’re just going to enjoy summer.” Junior lifeguard Libby Dowse says she’s looking forward to getting out on the boats and boards this season. “We get to spend a day at the beach with other lifeguards and do heaps of fun activities and sport - what’s not to love?”

Countdown is set to be bigger and better than ever before thanks to a great lineup of musical performances, food stalls, and to start the year of with a bang, a mesmerizing display of fireworks. The family-friendly event gets underway in upper Trafalgar St from 8pm in Thursday, December 31, and is the perfect place to welcome in the New Year. Presented by Nelson City

Last week’s solutions

Nelson movie-lovers are in for a treat, with Summer Movies al Fresco returning to the region’s park and reserves in the New Year. The outdoor movies will run right throughout January, playing in some of the most picturesque spots around the region. Nelson City Council Festivals team leader Axel de Maupeou says there is a great mix of classic movies to choose from this year, including Great Expectations, Guys and Dolls, and The Three Musketeers. “We’ve encompassed the main genres across six classics, so there’s something for everyone whether they’re looking for a laugh or something more thought-provoking.” Movies start at dusk, but people are encouraged to come early to play giant board games, have a picnic and listen to fine music. This year, venues include Fairfield House, Tahuna Beach Holiday Park and Isel Park in Nelson, plus Washbourn Gardens, Jester House, Takaka’s Wild Earth Nature Park, and the Moutere Hills Community Centre in Tasman. Movies will not screen if it’s raining, but if you’re unsure check the Summer in Nelson Facebook page or text 'Is it on?' to 021 776 623 after 7.30pm on the night. Movies run from 9 – 11pm and cost is $2 per adult, while children are only $1. The first movie is on Tuesday, January 5, at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park, where Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm will be played. The final movie of the season will be The Three Musketeers, on January 24, at Washbourn Gardens in Richmond.

It’s time to celebrate the New Year which means getting out and about and enjoying some great food, drink and entertainment in some of the region's best venues. While many New Year’s Eve celebrations are ticketed, the Nelson City Council will once again be providing people with a free event to countdown to 2016 under the Cathedral. Nelson’s New Year’s Eve

Snapper Classic is back and better than ever

Toby Wild from Moana NZ SUP paddles past Fifeshire Rock. Stand up paddle boarding is New Zealand’s fastest growing water sport and Nelson is no exception. Five years ago, paddle boarding was non-existent in Nelson, but today it’s almost impossible to drive past Tahunanui Beach without seeing someone up on a board. With plenty of great spots for paddling around the region, people are making the most of Nelson’s great weather and ideal paddle boarding conditions.

Grab your fishing rods and load up the boat because the Tasman Bay Snapper Classic is back once again for 2016 and is set to be bigger and better than ever before. Unlike other years in which the event was run as a business house and club competition, 2016 will be welcoming anyone and everyone to make a team of four and head out on the water, with all proceeds from the Snapper Classic going towards Coastguard Nelson. The Tasman Bay Snapper Classic may not be until Saturday, February 20, but organisers are putting the word out early, giving fishermen and women the chance to get their prime spot sorted for the big day.

Fishing starts at 5am and is confined to the Tasman Bay. Wrapping up at 5pm, everyone is welcome to Speights Ale House where competition entrants will receive a free meal. Everyone is encouraged to donate some of their catch to the fish auction, which will be open to the general public. And, if you manage to catch the average weight snapper, you’ll walk away with a prize pack worth $8000, including a DNA boat with a Honda Marine 4 stroke outboard on a trailer, thanks to sponsors DNA Alloy Boats and Honda Marine. For more information on the competition, or for an entry form, visit the website at www.tasmanbaysnapperclassic.co.nz
